On the front of Scientific Progress
The scientific debate on the need to overcome the use of animal testing, especially in the field of toxicology, is going ahead in the United States.
Thus, almost 10 years since the National Research Council document "Toxicity Testing In The 21st Century: A Vision and a Stategy", finally, President Obama signed a law which gives a first start with the provisions of that document
This is not a law that eliminates animal testing, but it provides limits and controls.
The law is still partial and includes several exceptions, similar to the rules in force in Europe, but it's still a first step. Now there are the conditions for the citizens and the American and European scientists to join forces to reach the final abolition of practices not only odious, but especially hazardous to our health and our environment.
Here is the feedback on this new law, as published by the US organization "Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine" (PCRM)

Modelling the Tox21 10 K chemical profiles for in vivo toxicity prediction and mechanism characterization
Animal data are inadeguate to predict the toxic effects on men. Animal experimentation is bad science and it's time to overcome it.
Only substitute methods, human based, are scientific and efficient. They represent the future for human health, animal rights and bio-medica progress. Read more here
